In most distros it is possible to install iceWM/ fluxbox/ Xfce etc. and 
remove KDE/GNOME.

Other incumbent distros have had net install CDs.  While some also 
include "rescue" functionality (openSUSE, Debian?), others are plain 
boot the system and find a repo on the network (RHEL/Fedora/CentOS) for 
the packages.
