[PLUG] Avahi daemon related

Can someone here tell me in simple terms what avahi daemon handles?

I am seeing message in my /var/log/messages which bothers me...

Is this the normal behaviour?

especially "Successfully dropped root privileges." portion....

Can I disable/stop avahi and still continue to work day-in-day-out?
