I have used FreeBSD in the past.   Beware of the differences between
the GNU and BSD tools.   The Debian project now has a FreeBSD distro
[1].   I have not tried it though so no personal experience.

Linux penetration is more thus driver availability might be an issue
for desktop type hardware.   Check respective HCL
